Create and update Goals
Create and update Goals to define an outcome, set a time frame, add context, and review progress from connected work. A Goal is useful only when its name, dates, description, and linked work are kept accurate.
Before you start
- You need create access to add a Goal.
- You need edit access to rename the Goal, change dates, or update the description.
- Progress depends on connected Tasks, Lists, and milestones.
- Reminder actions require reminder availability and access.
Create a Goal
- Open Collections or the area where Goals are available.
- Select Add.
- Choose Goal.
- Enter a clear outcome-focused name.
- Add start and due dates when the outcome has a time frame.
- Add a description that explains success criteria.
Expected outcome: the Goal opens with a summary area, date controls, description, Add menu, and milestone/linking area.
Goal Field Reference
| Field or control | What it does | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Progress percentage | Shows the completion percentage from connected task counts. | It is read-only. |
| Goal name | Identifies the outcome. | Select the name to rename when edit access is available. |
| More actions | Shows Remind me when available. | Use reminders for review or follow-up. |
| Start date | Sets when the Goal period begins. | Optional; use when timing matters. |
| Due date | Sets the expected completion date. | Optional but recommended for tracked outcomes. |
| Description | Stores context, success criteria, and review notes. | Supports rich text when the editor is available. |
| Add menu | Adds milestones or links Lists/Tasks. | Disabled without create access. |
Write a Useful Goal
- Name the outcome, not the task. Example: use Launch customer onboarding improvements, not Work on onboarding.
- Add the due date that should drive review.
- Use the description for success criteria, scope, and constraints.
- Add milestones for major stages.
- Link Lists and Tasks that actually drive progress.
Progress Rules
-
Goal progress is based on connected task counts.
-
Done tasks increase progress.
-
Open or incomplete tasks keep progress lower.
-
A Goal with no connected tasks can show no useful progress signal.
-
Milestones and linked Lists can bring their tasks into the progress calculation.
-
Mobile stacks fields vertically and can open pickers or selection dialogs as focused screens.
-
Dragging milestones on touch devices includes a small delay to avoid accidental drags while scrolling.
Troubleshooting
The Goal name will not update
- Symptom: Typing a new name does not save.
- Cause: You may not have edit access, or the name field was left empty.
- Resolution:
- Confirm edit access.
- Enter a non-empty name.
- Refresh and check the Goal title again.
Dates are read-only
- Symptom: Start or Due date cannot be changed.
- Cause: You do not have edit access.
- Resolution:
- Ask the owner or Space admin for edit access.
- Reopen the Goal after access changes.
Remind me is missing
- Symptom: The Goal more actions menu does not show Remind me.
- Cause: Reminder actions may be unavailable for your role, Space settings, or current item state.
- Resolution:
- Confirm reminder availability with a Space admin.
- Use a Task reminder as a fallback if your team tracks review work in Tasks.
